Last week, Whole Foods had a buy one get one free special on Fresh Mozzarella cheese. The minute I received the email, I knew I couldn’t resist, especially since I was off that day. I mean, who doesn’t love Fresh Mozzarella? It was the perfect beginning to a new grilled cheese sandwich. Sure, at that point I had no idea what else I would be adding to the sandwich but it was a start. I had the cheese…now I just needed the other ingredients.
- Italian Bread
- Crave Brothers Wisconsin Fresh Mozzarella Cheese
- Fried Avocado
the cheese: crave brothers wisconsin fresh mozzarella cheese
There is Mozzarella cheese and then there is Fresh Mozzarella cheese.
The texture is as amazing as its flavor. For me, personally, it is actually all about the texture. Sure, it has an awesome mild, delicate flavor, but that texture, not much else like it. It is meltable, perfect for your homemade pizza or grilled cheese sandwich.
the ingredient: fried avocado
I had no idea what would go with Fresh Mozzarella cheese that didn’t involve tomato, basil or balsamic vinegar. Those sandwiches have been done. I have created that sandwich. No longer is it anything special. The sous chef suggested avocado and although I have done avocado a lot, I hadn’t fried it before.
Taking great inspiration from A Cozy Kitchen / Adrianna’s Avocado Fries, I figured how I would use the avocado in a very different way. Following A Cozy Kitchen’s steps, I simply battered the avocado slices/pieces with milk, flour, egg and flour again and then dropped them in hot oil. It really was simple and they turned out great.
Sure, mine definitely don’t look as pretty and as perfect as Adrianna’s, but trust me, they taste great. I can see how they would make a great meal on their own…and how great they are in a grilled cheese.
the bread: italian
I went simple for the bread because I wanted the cheese and fried avocado to shine. Plus, Whole Foods really does make a great Italian bread. Simple but oh so delicious.
And again, I mess with video. Please try to enjoy this 10-second video as I continue to practice my technique.
grade: A Minus / B Plus
I love Fresh Mozzarella cheese. On a pizza, in a grilled cheese or even by itself, it is an amazing cheese. Put it between two slices of Italian bread and add some fried avocado and you have yourself a great grilled cheese sandwich. The crunchiness of the bread complimented the soft textures of the cheese and avocado. Plus, the batter really added a great and different flavor in each bite. Overall, this was a successful and unique sandwich. However, if I were to do it again, I would follow A Cozy Kitchen’s complete recipe and create her Lime Sriracha Mayo and include it in the sandwich for another flavor, but that is for a future blog post.
